How do delegates fit in the whole process of electing a leader?

Answer

The leadership campaign is a two-step process.

First, in each electoral district, campus club and women's club, Ontario Liberal members will gather to vote at a “Leadership Election Meeting” (LEM)—either February 8th or 9th, 2020—on two things:

  1. Who should be the leader of the party; and
  2. Who should be the delegates to the leadership convention.

This local vote will determine both the number of delegates for each leadership contestant (16 delegates in electoral districts, 8 in campus clubs, and 1 in women's clubs), and who the delegates to the convention will be.

Second, the delegates who are elected in each local leadership election meeting will travel to Mississauga to vote at the Leadership Convention on March 6th and 7th, 2020. It is these delegates (as well as some ex-officio delegates who automatically get to participate) who will ultimately determine who will be the next leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.
